Last night was exhausting to watch.
The police screwed up.
The county attorney screwed up.
The state police screwed up.
Is it really any surprise that Minneapolis blew the fuck up?
I just wanna wrap myself up in a blanket, lock myself in a closet and just disappear from the world for a while. This is crazy, scary, and concerning for the future of the country.

Probably going to get worse before it gets better. Just try to find optimism.
Tired of winning yet? I can’t stand all this winning.

My car is a former police vehicle. I’m absolutely terrified of what might happen to it if it gets targeted by rioters if the crazy gets up here in the PNW.

As long as you don’t hang out in some of the few urban areas that haven’t been gentrified, you’ll probably be fine. I’d wager the odds of a real riot here are fairly small.
But if some local brave warriors commit murder, all bets are off.

It is getting physically painful somedays. Michigan seems to have finally walked back from the brink, but today I found out someone at work may or may not have tested positive for covid-19 but no one knows and my boss has decided to go on a boating trip instead.... And then I turn on the news and see shit like that. And I just want to hop on the bike and disappear into the woods for a few weeks.

I suspect Maple Ridge is one of the better places to be on this continent right now.
But even in my overmonied white bread ‘n rice suburb, I am maybe a little more tempted.

Yeah, Maple Ridge is pretty isolated from racial tension
But, we do have a huge amount of property crime and mental health issues.

I t’s minor compared to the police murdering someone, but:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Outrageous, and hopefully those involved will be fired for trampling on first amendment rights.. At the very least they need to be given training on how to use their words instead of just standing around trying to look intimidating and then arresting people (and lying about the cause).

Perhaps you might take some efforts to make it look less like a police vehicle? Add some removable stickers to the glass? Plasti-dip some parts a non-police color?

I’d put the entire province into that isolation, if not the country. Can’t recall when Canada had its last real race/authoritarian violence related riot.
The latter is a thing everywhere now, due to economic devolution as much as anything.

It sure would be nice. But the events in Minneapolis have made it clear that the rules don't apply to police officers. You can murder someone in broad daylight, have it be caught on camera, and you won't even get arrested.

Yep, it’s nice that the fired those guys quickly (and that they fired all the guys on scene rather than just one scapegoat), but yeah it’s really hard to see any good reason why that officer hasn’t been arrested and charged.

Firing those officers was a good start. But there is ample evidence to arrest that man for murder. Most people who kill someone on camera don’t get the luxury of living at home while the authorities think about whether or not to charge them with a crime.

As with any country, racial issues are pretty regional.
I’d say that there is a decent amount of low-mid level racial tension in Metro Vancouver, specifically towards Asian and South Asian (Indian) ethnicities.
Overall in Canada our biggest failing/source of racial conflict is First Nations people.
In terms of ol’ fashioned American style
racism
, our biggest populations of people of African decent are in Toronto and Halifax (Black Nova Scotians being a distinct ethnic group recognized by the government), so those are going to be your areas with the most incidents and
corresponding
BLM style movements.

No doubt there is racial injustice everywhere, but I don’t know of any supposed first world nation where the protect and serve heroes have a track record for killing certain minorities as in the US. I suspect people of color are treated better in ON or NS than in much of the US.
It’s interesting, as many of south Asian/Indian heritage I know here have family in the lower mainland. They seem to paint a picture like a lot of that tension is between rival factions. But there are always plenty of deplorables who see a guy in a turban and somehow think jihadist, rather than just another hardworking person who wears a different hat.

For sure our country is overall much better to be a minority in. I think a massive part of that is our policing structure. The RCMP provides quality trained officers across the country and has strong measures in place to both prevent discrimitation and promote ethinic diversity in its ranks.
Also, because of it’s unique structure (military-esque deployments) it makes it so that officers very rarely work in the area where they are from (at least initially). It kinda removes people from an environment where they may have prejudices and plops them into a totally new world.

The RCMP definitely seems more respectable than many of the tacticool organizations on this side of the border, especially in most major cities and maybe south of certain latitudes.
I suspect there’s maybe more accountability, too - the most powerful union in this land is law enforcement, and the right loves to bash unions, but won’t touch the brave hero version.

What exactly was the cause given? I saw the clip until the point the entire crew was arrested and they put their cameras down. What grounds do they have to arrest this crew on, and assuming they were released shortly thereafter?
Is this anything other than plain old intimidation and display of dominance?

They later told the producer that they were under arrest for refusing to move (despite the reporter repeatedly offering to move if needed). They were released around four hours later after the governor called their arrest completely unacceptable.

Thanks for the update, still not fully up on the days news (and probably trying to avoid it to some extent in hopes of getting through the work day with my sanity).
So basically boils down to that last line in my prior post then, great!

No, you?
Also, it isn’t legal to use a firearm on another person
defensively
in Canada. You’ll always be charged, you just may get acquitted.

I meant Fintail, he had previously indicated he was considering picking one up.
The only reason I’m considering gun shopping is that the federal government is on the warpath here, taking the limited amount of firearms freedoms we have away.
Good time to pick up a few items while before some sort of registry comes in or even more draconian mag limits/arbitrary rules.
